Pongal is a popular rice based South Indian dish popular especially in Tamil Nadu. There are different varieties of Pongal namely sakarai pongal (sweet pongal), khara pongal (spicy pongal). The Khara pongal is also known as ven pongal. Pongal is a popular breakfast dish. Here is the simple recipe to prepare Pongal.


Ingredients

  • Rice-1cup
  • Moong dal-1/4 cup
  • Cumin seeds-1 tsp
  • Pepper corns-1 tsp
  • Pepper powder-1/2 tsp
  • Cashew nuts(broken)-A few
  • Desiccated coconut -1/2 cup
  • Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp
  • Ghee-
Steps

  • Fry the moong dal.
  • Cook the fried moong dal and rice together with 3 cups of water,until soft.
  • Add turmeric powder,few pepper corns,coconut and 2tbsp ghee,and cook well.
  • Heat  4 tbsp ghee in a frying pan and add cumin seeds,pepper corns and cashew nuts, and fry well.
  • Mix it with the cooked rice mixture ,salt and pepper powder.
  • Serve it hot and fresh.

Tips:Add little more ghee at the end to make it tasty.
Note: The dehydrated shredded flesh of coconut known as desiccated coconut.
