Onam,Ona sadya,Onasadhya,Onam special ,Traditional Onam dishes and how to serve ona sadya

Onam is the first and major festival of Kerala and is celebrated by Malayalis across the Globe.It is celebrated to remember Mahabali the ancient King of Kerala,Malayalis=s believe that on Onam day Bali visits his people.
Carnival of Onam lasts for ten days and brings out the best of Kerala culture and tradition.Onasadhya is the most favorite and delicious part of the Onam festival.

Onasadya is prepared on the last day of Onam, called Thiruovnam.There will be 11 to13 essential dishes for Onasadya.
Rice is the essential ingredient and it must be a Vegetarian Meals.Traditional Onam Sadya meal is very rich in with different varieties of curries, upperies,pappadam,pickles,uppilittathu,payasam,fruits etc.

How is it Served?
Traditionally people have 'Onasadya' seated on a mat laid on the floor.The food has to be served on a tender Banana leaf, laid with the end to the left hand side.
Pappadam is to be served on the extreme left.Banana(Rasakadali, Poovan or Palayankodan) should be served at the top of this pappadam.
From the right of this pappad - salt, banana wafers, sarkarapuratti fries are served. After that, ginger lime and mango pickles are served.
Next comes 'vellarika', 'pavakka', beetroot and 'ullikitchadi'. 'Pineapple Kitchadi' and banana splits or of grapes are served along with this.
On the right, 'Thoran' is served.Then comes beans thoran,The meal will be complete with the 'Avial' and 'kootu curry'.
Rice(2 big spoon is enough) is served when the guests seats on the mat.Then parippu' and ghee is poured over this rice.After that sambar comes.
Payasams are to begin with Ada pradhaman followed by 'Kadala Payasam'.This colorful, rich onasadhya arrangement on the lush green banana leaf makes the food more interesting and delicious.
